Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the research programme is to investigate structure-property relationships in a novel class of polymeric materials, namely supramolecular side-chain liquid crystal polymers. The novelty of this molecular architecture is that the side-chains are attached via non-covalent interactions to the polymer backbone. The main thrust of the programme, therefore, involves a systematic study of the effects of non-bonded interactions on the liquid crystalline behaviour in such materials. This will include (a) the synthesis of new materials, (b) their thermal characterisation by optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry and (c) physical studies of the molecular organisation within the mesophases. In addition, the stability of these materials to electric fields will be investigated.
