Summary on Grant Application Form
A novel method of measuring the permeability of the dendrite mesh in a solidifying alloy is proposed. The interdendritic liquid is caused to flow under an applied pressure gradient, and the rate of flow is measured by weight transfer of the liquid across the zone, measured on a balance which is calibrated to determine weight transfer. The permeability will be linked to measurements of such parameters as volume fraction of solid, and possibly the specific surface area of the solid. The limits to such interdendritic flow will also be explored using real-time x-ray radiography to identify failure of flow brought about by such events as the formation of layer porosity, and general collapse of the dendrite mesh.
