Summary on Grant Application Form
To prepare new porphyrins and metalloporphyrins with -substituents (eg long-chain ether, thio-ether, and ester chains) that facilitate the formation of discotic liquid-crystal (L-C) phases, and donor and acceptor meso-substituents that will increase the polarisation of the molecule in an applied field, so enhancing the strength of second- and third-order NLO effects. To prepare NLO-active two-electron-oxidised porphyrins (also meso-substituted with donor and acceptor groups) that, as monomers and/or as oligomers with themselves and their porphyrin precursors, are compatible with known discotic L-C materials. To evaluate property/structure relationships of the new compounds, and, by feeding the data back to synthesise optimised NLO-active/L-C porphyrinic materials. To investigate the L-C phase properties of the new materials, and follow variations in their third-order NLO properties (eg third-harmonic generation, intensity dependence of refractive index, two-photon absorption, coherent Raman effects, and the optical Kerr effect) with changes in L-C phase. To fabricate optimised materials into opto-electronic devices that demonstrate third-order nonlinear effects, eg optical switching, and optical bistability.
