Summary on Grant Application Form
A detailed evaluation will be made of the response to stress changes in creep by using the capability we have developed of measuring strains down to 10-8 without complications due to thermal fluctuations. This will also provide information on possible threshold stresses and on stress/strain rate relationships just above this level, where extrapolations from higher stress levels have proved unreliable. Thus characteristics of anelastic behaviour will be determined over a wide range of stress and temperature and related to the build up of creep and fatigue damage. A range of materials, including appropriate aluminium alloys, ferritic and austenitic steels, nickel-based alloys and oxide dispersion strengthened mechanically processed alloys will be included in the investigation. Particular attention will be given to the effects of the highly anisotropic microstructure in the latter alloys with specimen geometry and orientation allowing a full exploration of anisotropy through tests in shear and bending and in uniaxial tension and compression. Results will be compared with recent theoretical analyses to provide information of scientific and technological value.
