The purpose of this project is to investigate the crytallographic defect structure and magnetic domain structure in high quality, commercially available Terfenol-D crystals, to observe magnetic domain structures simultaneously with measurement of magnetisation and magnetostrictive response to applied field and stress, and to establish correlations between the defect structure and magnetoelastic properties with the aim of optimising magnetic performance. Defect variations will be investigated in part by use of crystals solidified under different conditions using VFZ and BG growth mechanisms, and in part by variations in post-growth anneal treatments. It is considered that the unique, room temperature magnetostrictive strain property of these crystals offers an exciting prospect for the investigation of domain-defect interactions.
