In the light of recent synthetic and x-ray structural studies at Durham we propose to prepare new highly-functionalised tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives and related bis(1,3-dithiole) systems. The special feature of our target ligands is that bipyridyl and N2S2 units, capable of coordinating transition metals, are attached to the TTF frame by a variety of spacer groups. The systematic incorporation of transition metals into TTF structures has not been explored previously. We will investigate the relationship between molecular structure, electronic and magnetic properties of the metal-coordinated species, with a view to obtaining novel supramolecular redox systems.
