Summary on Grant Application Form
When a magnetic field is applied to a crystal, the resulting Hamiltonian no longer has the symmetry characteristic of a periodic system, Bloch's theorem does not hold and standard techniques no longer apply for calculation of electronic states of the system. In the last decade, however, experiments in semiconductors, especially in hetero-structure-based quantum-well systems, have produced electron and hole states well into the conduction and valance bands with magnetic fields of 20 tesla and greater. This proposal is to develop and apply a new microscopic technique to the calculation of electron and hole states in bulk and layered semiconductors in the presence of applied magnetic fields. Finite superlattices, quantum wells, quantum wires and the quantum Hall geometry will be considered.
