Our dual aims, in this interdepartmental programme are:1) to establish ways in which uniquely interpretable data can be obtained from high resolution electron micrographs and diffraction patterns which have been energy filtered in the TEM.2) to use these methods for the solution of a range of materials problems on currently important interface and bonding problems. These include: a) the effects of ionicity and directionality of bonding on ductility in a range of intermetallics, with a view to understanding the effects of alloying on brittleness and b) the structural and compositional analysis both of APBs in intermetallics (as can affect the T dependence of strength) and of segregated grain boundaries in relation to embrittlement. The cornerstone to our work is that it is now established both experimentally and theoretically that it is only once an image or diffraction pattern has been energy filtered that both the intensities and the patterns can be reliably matched to simulations for a given structural model. We expect that as the test applications in our programme establish both the basic approach and the further developed techniques which can be applied, so too will the range of materials problems, which can be quantitatively tackled, broaden.
