Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme is interdisciplinary, involving synthetic chemistry and detailed optical studies in the field of metallated and ionomeric polydiacetylenes. New soluble metal-containing polydiacetylenes will be synthesised by reaction of polymers with transition metal reagents in solution, and the products will be characterised by reference to related low molar mass 'model' organometallic compounds. New polydiacetylenes with pendent ionic groups will be prepared and characterised: products will include polymers functionalised with anionic carboxylic or sulfonic acid groups, cationic quaternary ammonium or phosphonium groups, or zwitterionic groups in the side chains. Relationships between molecular structure and macroscopic third-order optical non-optical characterisation will also yield data relevant to electrical and magnetic properties which would be enhanced should intermolecular interactions lead to liquid crystalline mesophases. Existing device expertise will guide the programme with respect to applications requirements, and offer direct opportunities to demonstrate devices.
