Summary on Grant Application Form
To study a new series of liquid crystalline copolymers made from maleic anhydride and mesogenic olefins using a number of mesogenic olefins as well as normal olefins as comonomers. By copolymerisation with SO2, the relationship of these polymers to polyolefin sulphones will be established, the latter being main chain as well as side chain crystalline. The presence of maleic anhydride residues on the backbone will be exploited to modify the structures through reactions with mesogens, non-mesogens, dyes and crosslinking agents. With metal salts we will obtain novel ionomeric liquid crystalline polymers. The properties of these materials will be examined by NMR spectroscopy, deuterium NMR being used to measure order parameters at sites within the mesogenic and non-mesogenic components as a function of temperature. We will study the shifts of Xe129 in a similar manner to probe molecular interactions within series of copolymer at different temperatures. We will study the switching time of ferroelectric polymers and attempt to visualise the manner in which the structures organise themselves on graphite/ surfaces by means of scanning tunnelling electron microscopy, and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy.
