Summary on Grant Application Form
The main purpose of the project is to model the spontaneous initiation and development of combustion that may occur if a combustible fluid leaks into porous insulation material surrounding hot pipes in industrial environments. The energy and mass conservation equations associated with thermal ignition need to be extended to include the consequences of transfer of the fluid through the inert matrix as a result of evaporation and condensation. The qualitative structure of solutions to these equations will be examined, and numerical methods will be used to predict quantitative spatio-temporal behaviour in two and three dimensions, including ignition, under the combined effects of diffusion of the combustible fluid and of oxygen from the atmosphere at given thermal boundary conditions. Interactive graphics will aid interpretation of the numerics, and results will be validated against laboratory experiments now in progress. Generalised formulations of the criteria for ignition in a form suitable for practical use are also to be sought.
