Summary on Grant Application Form
An apparatus for the reaction of metal nitrides under high pressure nitrogen (to 3.3 kbar) at temperatures to 1000C will be constructed. The apparatus and all material handling will be sited in an oxygen and moisture free glove box. The synthesis of complex transition metal nitrides of the type ABN3, AB2N4 and ABN2 will be undertaken. The products from the synthesis program will be characterised in terms of their electronic, magnetic and spectrossopic properties. Phenomena studied will include metal-antiferromagnetic-insulator transitions, spin fluctuations, anomalous resistivity and crystal field spectroscopy. The potential of these materials as battery electrodes will be assessed.
