Summary on Grant Application Form
A series of amphiphilic spacer materials will be synthesised to interleave with optically nonlinear donor - (p-bridge) - acceptor dyes in non-centrosymmetric LB film structures, the aim being to interlock the hydrophobic chains of the components comprising the bilayer structure to form low-loss multilayer films. The project is based on recent studies at Cranfield which have demonstrated (i) long-range order in such interlocking films to thicknesses of about 1 mm, and (ii) quadratic enhancement of the second harmonic intensity with the number of layers, the SHG being the strongest so far reported from any LB film. The position of the anion in films of cationic hemicyanine dyes significantly affects the magnitude of the SHG and it is anticipated that a ten-fold increase in the signal from a multilayer structure is within reach.
