Summary on Grant Application Form
In order to improve the performance of adhesives, organic coatings and polymer matrix composites there is a need to design the interface chemistry of such systems in a predictive manner. The use of such an approach requires a detailed knowledge of the properties of both phases. Recent work has indicated that the consideration of acid-base interactions in adhesion has much to commend as a route to engineering the interfacial chemical properties. This proposal is concerned with the development of XPS procedures for the determination of the acido-basic properties of materials. The proposed methods are essentially ones that relate discrete chemical shifts within the XPS spectrum to the exothermic enthalpy of acid-base interaction (-2Hab). In such a way it will be possible to guild up a data base of surface materials properties for both model and commercial systems. The other aim of the proposal is to use modern x-ray monochromator technology to probe acid-base interaction at interfaces directly. This will be accomplished by the use of very thin polymer films and detailed processing of highest resolution XPS data.
