The proposed programme at York will involve the synthesis of novel cyclic polymers using polymer supported reagents. Large scale preparations of cyclic polymers will be carried out in order to provide enough material to allow for the synthesis of new topological polymers. Fractionation will take place at York making use of the preparative gel permeation chromatographic instrument. As a result, substantial quantities of sharp fractions will become available for the topological polymer chemistry that is planned. This includes the preparation of the first catenated polymers; some polyrotaxanes and networks modified by entrapped cyclic polymers. All these novel materials will be characterised and studied at York and by other research groups in the UK.In addition, new cyclic polymers prepared at Manchester will be characterised and investigated at York, following on from the 3 year collaboration between the two centres. Again, it is expected that other research groups will join in the study of these novel polymeric materials.
