The majority of chemical information contained in the inelastic spectrum of scattered electrons is not utilised in conventional transmission images and diffraction patterns. The attachment of a commercial aberration-corrected filter below our Hitachi HF-2000 field emission microscope will allow the parallel collection of two-dimensional energy-selected data. It is proposed to make a systematic analysis of the relation between localisation of core-loss scattering due to excitation of an inner-shell electron and the spatial resolution of corresponding inelastic images. Calculations based on inelastic dynamical theory will be compared with energy-filtered diffraction patterns as a function of energy-loss for K, L and M edges, specimen thickness and local coordination chemistry. The results will be applied to interpret the spatial resolution across sharp interfaces and also to lattice images from crystals with larger unit cells. Several typical examples of multiphase specimens will be examined, including magnetic multilayers of 3d transition metals, diamond films grown by cVD, low density Ti-Mg and Ti-Ca alloys grown by sputtering and also fibre-reinforced composites.
