Summary on Grant Application Form
Information on the biaxial strength, fatigue and hysteresis behaviour of rubber compounds is essential for the prediction of service life during the design of practical components by finite element analysis (FEA) methods. It is expected that large changes in the strength and fatigue lives of crystallising rubbers will be obtained in the transition from uniaxial to equibiaxial straining, but non-crystallising rubbers will be less affected. An experimental programme, based on innovative equipment and supported by FEA hyperplastic stress analysis, is proposed to explore the biaxial behaviour of rubber compounds. Biaxial strength, fatigue and hysteresis behaviour will be determined from the pneumatic inflation of a previously flat sheet of rubber. Interpretation of the results will be directed towards: fatigue life models for use with FEA; relationships of elastomer characteristics and filler dispersion with fatigue life for selection of rubber compound formulations and mixing techniques.
