(1) To measure the hydrodynamic damping of a cylinder subject to external high frequency excitation, in the presence of oscillatory and steady flows at Reynolds numbers above 10(5). (2) To test alternative models for predicting hydrodynamic damping against the data. This project aims to provide measurements of hydrodynamic damping of a cyclinder in conditions that are representative of the motion of offshore systems, but which have previously received little attention in experiments. Tests will be conducted using towing carriages supporting a flexibly mounted cylinder to achieve steady and oscillatory flow at Reynolds numbers greater thn 10(5). Measurements of hydrodynamic damping will be obtained from the response of the cylinder to external excitation at high frequencies. Results will be used to test the validity of methods adopted in the industry for estimating hydrodynamic damping.
