Summary on Grant Application Form
1. Develop theoretical estimates for the kinematics and statistics of unsteady steep water waves. 2. Improve estimates of water wave impact pressures on marine structures. Initial work will be on large scale detailed computations of water wave evolution. Preliminary computations show that this will lead to occasional steep wave events. These events take the form of short groups of steep waves that last for only a few periods. Statistics of the occurrence and properties of steep wave events will be accumulated under Dr Dold's supervision. These computations will be an approximation to random seas and can be compared with experimental data. The detailed flow in steep wave events will be examined and ways will be sought in which such substantial data sets can be presented for ease of use and assimilation by designers. Prof. Peregrine will be involved in this latter aspect and in further development of the project toassess the impact effects of steep wave events. The impulse resulting from wave impacts will be estimated with methods that have recently been developed for studying impact pressures on coastal structures. Program development will aim to be independent of software packages, such as specialist graphics and mathematics packages, by using the industry standard X windows environment and independent programs. Preliminary results will be incorporated into a design case study to enable better interactive development.
