The synthesis of all-carbon polymers will be undertaken using methodologies which introduce safety-catches into the mainchain. These are functional groups chemically stable under the conditions met during the normal working lifetime of the polymer but which can be rendered liable by an appropriate chemical treatment ( triggering ) not normally encountered by the polymers. Once triggered , safety-catches will become sites for facile cleavage of the polymer mainchain to yield oligomeric fragments. Three strategies have been identified for the introduction of controlled levels of carbon-carbon double bonds, amino and phenyl ester groups, cyclic acetal residues or pyrazine groups into mainchains. Likewise suitable triggering chemistry has been specified. The required molecular structural changes in polymers will be characterised by high field; H nmr spectroscopy and controlled degradation monitored by g.p.c. In the first instance, appropriate poly(n-butyl methacrylates) will function as model polymers in order to develop and demonstrate the generic concept of safety-catches and their potential value in polymer recycling.
