Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research is an extension to a current SERC grant, about to be completed, that involved a successful pilot project into the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the treatment of ultrasonic data from polymer composites. The research investigated whether ANNs could be used to create an image of a defect, and the location of any acoustic emission (AE). The new work will construct an automated system for the collection of ultrasonic data, using a fixed array of transducers surrounding an area of interest within a polymer composite. This will locate and image defects (such as cracks and delaminations) in composite panels and also locate and characterise AE sources. ANN development will also take place, so that the speed and accuracy of imaging and AE analysis will be optimised, and the ANN implemented in hardware. A final phase will use the system thus developed to track the growth of fatigue cracks, and the detection of defects in aircraft wings constructed from advanced fibre-reinforced polymer composites.
