Summary on Grant Application Form
1. To assess the mass transfer and liquid throughput of a novel compact contractor for air stripping of soluble aromatic hydrocarbon components from different water compositions. 2. To compare the performance of the compact contractor with a packed column on similar feeds. Water from offshore production platforms contains soluble hydrocarbon components as well as the dispersed components which existing equipment is designed to remove. In this project, the effectiveness of air stripping for removing the more toxic, volatile, soluble aromatic components will be investigated. A novel compact contactor will be studied. Variables include water and air flow rates, composition and concentration of low M.W. aromatics, and equipment design parameters. Concentrations of dispersed and other soluble hydrocarbon components may also be studied. To obtain a more fundamental understanding of performance attempts will be made to measure velocities and bubble sizes within the contactor. Some runs will also be done on a 200 mm conventional packed column to obtain comparative performance data for the same feed compositions.
