Summary on Grant Application Form
The main objective is to provide a sound basis for the design of FRP load bearing equipment for the waste water treatment industry. Following a review of the literature on long term environmental properties of FRP and of current design methods, the LINK partners will produce and evaluate several designs for rotational distributors for biological filter beds. Assessment of these designs will pay particular attention to manufacturing feasibility and potential lifetime costs. Filament winding is expected to form an important manufacturing route and environmental testing will be based on filament wound specimens under load. One design for a range of sizes of equipment will be carried through to completion and a prototype manufactured for evaluation in the field. The project is expected to result in design methods and long term data related to appropriate manufacturing methods and suitable for a range of waste water treatment equipment designed to meet rigorous specifications and resulting in reduced installation and running costs.
