The proposed research is part of a multidisciplinary programme of work to examine the application of transputer arrays to numerically intensive computing problems in aerospace vehicle simulation modelling. Rotorcraft, such as helicopters, represent perhaps the most challenging application. The aims of the research are to demonstrate the viability of transputer technology for design applications involving rotorcraft flight dynamics models, and to demonstrate the feasibility of incorporating flight dynamics analyses earlier in the design process. The research will address the optimum transputer array configuration with regard to the inherent parallelism in the model, and any parallelism in the design methods examined, which will include algorithms to calculate trimmed flight state of the aircraft, transient response to control inputs, derivation of stability characteristics and Monte-Carlo simulation. The results will allow industry to assess readily the viability of transputer technology for integrating flight dynamics analyses into the design process. The potential benefit to industry of applying the technology will be to reduce the cost of design and therefore contribute to enhanced competitiveness.
