1. To upgrade the existing Imperial College Hollow Cylinder Apparatus. 2. To investigate the stress strain and strength properties of low plasticity clays and silts under general stress conditions using the Hollow Cylinder Apparatus. 3. To consider the implications of the results obtained for offshore foundation design and safety assessment. The control system of the HCA will be upgraded by implementing a more powerful computer controller, new A/D converters and associated signal conditioning, and a displacement driven actuator system. The last item will allow failure and post peak behaviour to be studied in a more stable way. The experimental programme will then focus on: (1) Extending the research on K(o) consolidated HK and KSS. (2) Exploring the effects of principal stress rotation and intermediate principal stress on K(o) consolidated silt or clay silt. (3) Studying the behaviour of samples that are consolidated with the principal stresses rotated from the vertical. This previously unexplored area has considerable practical significance. (4) Using the HCA to assist with the interpretation of conventional simple shear tests.
