In existing microstrip and CPW microwave circuits using high-Tc superconductors it is found that the high current and field intensity at conductor edges cause a serious limitation to the power handling capability. Int his proposed project we intend to investigate novel microstrip and CPW structures which can achieve a very uniform current and field distribution. This will be done by using novel conductor cross-sections and by employing non-uniform dielectric substrates. The techniques will be investigated using conformal mapping theoretical analysis; using computer simulations, and using some practical experiments. One technique of particular interest is the 'valley' microstrip technique in which a V-shaped conductor cross-section is used. This cannot only give a uniform current and field distribution, but also the sloping substrate edges may have special advantages for the epitaxial growth of very high quality HTS material. We are conficent that the proposed techniques will yield a major improvement in the performance of HTS microwave circuits for future communications and radar applications.
