Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme is for the development of a finite element based technique for modelling the problems associated with delamination of composites. The programme will commence with the development and testing of a robust delamination growth model building on the work of a previous contract on this topic. This will involve extensive studies of parametric dependence of the model. The problem of coupling this delamination growth algorithm with the algorithms for composite buckling behaviour already present in the departmental finite element program will then be addressed. This will be followed by an investigation of techniques for predicting the initiation of delamination and finally by an assessment of the difficulties encountered in attempting to model crack jumping and branching frequently observed in multidirectional composites. Throughout the programme the numerical techniques developed will be evaluated against published work and experimental results conducted within this programme.
