Summary on Grant Application Form
A separated flow with a porous reattachment surface will be investigated so that the optimum conditions for passive buffet alleviation can be established. The feedback mechanism, whereby pressure fluctuations generated in the reattachment region propagate upstream to influence the shear layer at separation, will be 'short-circuited' by this method is so that the observed low-frequency flapping (buffeti) of separated shear layers about to reattach can be investigated in detail. The effect of the impermeability constraint on the flow at reattachment will be deduced from measurements obtained above both non-porous and porous surfaces. Turbulence statistics will be used to direct the modelling of such flows, ultimately so that the buffet onset and severity can be predicted accurately.
