Summary on Grant Application Form
A novel wire-mesh apparatus has recently been developed under SERC Grant GR/F89817 which can apply temperatures up to 2000C, heating rates greater than 2x104K/s and extended hold times at peak temperature (up to 10 s). This offers a unique capability to explore the fundamental nature of nitrogen release from coal, a major factor in determining the effectiveness of existing and proposed low-NOx combustion schemes. In particular, extended particle heating times under reducing conditions may help to overcome current limits on low-NOx combustion systems. Entrained flow test systems would have to be extremely large to determine fundamental coal behaviour at times of potential interest, up to perhaps 5 seconds, but the captive-sample wire-mesh reactor has no intrinsic limitation on heating time. Through collaboration with a much larger existing programme, samples of a range of approximately 20 coals are available for testing. These have already been characterised in a range of large- and/or small-scale entrained flow combustion test systems, offering an opportunity for critically assessing the experimental data and resultant models obtained from the proposed fundamental study.
