Summary on Grant Application Form
Pilot work by the proposer has highlighted the severe inadequacies of today's nonlinear finite element package in relation to nonlinear dynamics with low frequency excitation. Following these studies, the proposer has developed a new method which seems to allow much larger time steps. The proposed research is intended to extend the ideas from the simple truss elements that have so far been considered to 3-D beams and shells, and to implement and test them in a near-commercial code. The first key area of application involves structures with flexible motion superimposed on large rigid rotations. Examples involve space structures (letter from ESA and BAe) and the vibrations in landing gear (letter from Dowty Aerospace Landing Gear). A second important application area involves low velocity impact (letter from DRA-Farnborough) and transient response in ship structures (letter from DRA-Dunfermline).
