Summary on Grant Application Form
The analysis of high frequency vibration levels in aerospace and marine structures is not amenable to standard approaches such as the finite element method, due to the relatively short wavelength of the structural deformations. An alternative aproach is Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA), which is based on the concept of vibrational energy flow. The application of SEA to a given problem requires knowledge of the coupling loss factors (CLFs) which govern the energy flow between structural elements. One aim of the resent proposal is to extend very recent results concerning the CLFs between curved structural components. The accuracy and validity of the SEA approach will then be systematically assessed by comparison with the results of a previously developed dynamic stiffness technique, which is applicable to prismatic structures of arbitrary cross-section. Improvements to the SEA approach to allow for the presence of non-diffuse vibrational wave fields will be made, and finally an experimental (non-prismatic) structures will be built and tested to provide a practical test of the theory.
