The aim of the proposed programme is to develop new algorithms for modelling and quantifying cylinder pressure data, within a stochastic framework. Special emphasis will be placed on the statistical modelling of cycle-to-cycle variations. The ability to model such random variations in a realistic manner is of increasing importance in simulations of the oscillations which occur in drive train and intake/exhaust systems, as a result of cyclic combustion fluctuations. The proposed work will be applicable to particular engines for which a stochastic model has been identified over a range of operating conditions, and will provide a relatively simple and specific model for those engines. The programme will yield efficient methods for estimating the parameters in the stochastic model, through optimal fitting to experimental data acquired from a particular engine, and will also result in theoretical methods for estimating the statistical variability of the parameter estimates, enabling engine tests to be cost-effectively designed.
