The project objective is to optimise the conditions and to produce a system that uses waste seaweed (residue after alginate removal) as a biomass for the biosorption of aqueous metal ion pollutants. The material (seaweed residue) is an easily available source of biomass which has both been shown to have excellent metal ion binding affinity and is also a problem waste of the industry.In addition to optimising an industrial design studies will look at the possible end uses of the biomass once the biorecovery properties have been exhausted. These include biogas generation by anaeobic digestion and the production of a soil additive.
