Summary on Grant Application Form
Existing expertise (Dr. Gibbs) on liquid chemical injection for controlling power station NOx emissions without catalysts is to be applied to diesel engine exhaust gases. Diesel exhaust gases are at too low a temperature for the deNOx reduction to take place using ammonia and related liquids. However, in cylinder exhaust stroke conditions have the required temperature and residence times and hence has the potential for efficient exhaust stroke deNOx. The effectiveness of this method of diesel deNOx will be investigated for the first time. Diesel engine conditions of temperature, residence time, oxygen, SO2 and UHC levels are quite different from power stations and the optimum chemical and temperatures are likely to be quite different. This work aims to establish the optimum chemical and injection timing for NOx reduction.
