Summary on Grant Application Form
Optimisation of processing routes and properties of metal-matrix composites requires research in novel nondestructive evaluation techniques. The aim of this research project will be to focus on the characterisation of two types of defects, anomalies at the fibre/matrix interface and porosity. It will also address the questions of anistropy and fibre fraction. The existing broadband ultrasonic system, which has been developed with previous SERC funding, will be upgraded and used for this work. The work will involve developing two Rayleigh wave techniques, one for imaging inhomogeneities, the other for making quantitative velocity measurements for characterisation of anisotropy, porosity and fibre content. A more conventional C-scan imaging technique will also be investigated for looking at the fibre/matrix interface. The application of these techniques to metal-matrix composites will require development of signal/image processing methods for improvement of the available resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. The effect of the anisotropy of these materials on the image quality in both C-scan and Rayleigh wave modalities will also be investigated using a theoretical model.
