Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposed research is to develop a structural health monitoring system to aid engineers in the evaluation and assessment of damage in welded steel plate girder bridges. The system will enable engineers to assess the structural condition of bridges and provide a means of planning and budgeting of maintenance works, based upon the estimated remaining life of the structure. The research encompasses an investigation into crack growth criteria and the monitoring of structural systems using Acoustic Emission. This work will include fatigue coupon testing, large scale tests on slender plate girders and feasibility testing of the system on a scale model. The work is intended to be directly applicable to Local Highway Authorities as part of their maintenance programme on bridges. This will lead to future work involving the development of an expert system capable of crack location, growth analysis and remaining life prediction.
