Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme will make major contributions to the science and technology of electrostatic precipitation. The project will develop systematic techniques for improving discharge electrodes and will prove those techniques using a full-scale precipitator. This will be done by (i) reviewing and extending the understanding of how electrode geometry affects the coupled physical processes that control particle charging and particle collection; (ii) constructing a mathematical model of the physical processes and simulating these on a computer so that new geometries can easily be tried; and (iii) constructing promising electrode designs and trying them both in a simple laboratory set-up and in the full-scale test unit of a major manufacturer.
