The aim of this proposed research programme is to develop a technique for obtaining the incremental or superimposed voltage signals at a relaying point following the incidence of a fault. Although this can be done directly using voltage and current transducers the novelty of the proposed approach is that only current transducers are required. This means that in certain applications a voltage transducers (VT) may not be needed (thus saving space and costs) and also that the use of a current transducer (CT) only gives inherently broad band signals which are essential in ultra-high-speed protection. The incremental voltage signals are obtained by digital signal processing of the current signals. Several possible approaches have been identified and their relative advantages and disadvantages will be investigated. Although the emphasis of this proposal is on protection, there may be wider applications of the proposed technique in areas such as control and machine monitoring.
