Summary on Grant Application Form
The first phase of the programme would be concerned with the design and construction of a single-cylinder spark-ignition (si) research engine with optical access to study the structure of direct injection (di) fuel sprays. The engine would be designed to be suitable for use with a variety of cylinder heads and injection systems, and would be capable of being run in either 2- or 4-stroke configurations. A novel instrumentation technique would be developed which would use the images from two CCD cameras to study droplet, size, position and velocity. The second phase of the programme would consist of a series of tests performed with diesel-type fuel system injecting gasoline in a 2-valve si engine run on a 4-stroke cycle. Injector design, timing and air swirl would be varied while recordings were made of spray structure. A further series of engine tests would be performed to record engine performance at the various conditions covered during the first series of tests. At the end of programme, a fully-developed research test bed would be available to perform further research for industry on di si engines.
