Summary on Grant Application Form
A growth, physics and device study of quantum well wire (QWR) structures grown by MOVPE on patterned v-groove substrates is proposed. Efforts will be concentrated on the GaAs-AlGaAs materials system. The production of the QWR structures of quantum dimensions (300A) will rely on purely growth related features which occur in MOVPE as opposed to MBE growth. A number of innovations in the growth aimed at producing enhanced selectivity in QWR growth will be employed. A wide range of characterisation and physics experiments will be performed including PL, PL excitation, spatially and spectrally resolved cathodoluminescence, SEM, TEM and magneto-PL. Device studies of QWR laser diode structures will be carried out, employing novel ion implantation methods for device isolation.
