|
The influence of residual stress and microstructural variables on the fatigue strength of gear materials will be investigated in collaboration with a wider programme on fatigue strength and gear design. The effect of clean steel practice will be quantified with respect to fatigue strength and its variation and the presence and distribution of non-metallic inclusions. In the course of the programme the fatigue strength determined by a number of different loading methods including four point bending, pulsator tests on gears and gear failure simulations in back-to-back tests will be correlated. The aim is to develop a model of fatigue strength and gear reliability relating the applied stress field, the residual stress field and the metallurgical structures The work will enable better, more economic design of gears.
