Summary on Grant Application Form
This research is concerned with the dynamics of turbulent mixing layers containing coherent structures at Reynolds numbers beyond that of the so-called mixing transition. Experiments will be carried out in which two uniform streams of gas with different velocities are brought together at the trailing edge of a splitter plate, producing a mixing layer which can be studied at different velocity ratios and Reynolds numbers. In some of the experiments gases of different densities will be used to form the two streams. The geometry of the test section will be adjusted once the flows are established to provide conditions approximating very closely to those of free shear and the similarity characteristics of the mixing layer determined from velocity and pressure measurements and by flow visualisation. The flow visualisations will be recorded on high-speed cine film and subjected to detailed analysis in order to provide information about the pattern and mechanism of the coherent-structure development in the high-Reynolds-number regime. The similarity data will be used to test various theoretical models of the coherent-structure development in this regime.
