Summary on Grant Application Form
A three-dimensional elliptic solver, capable of running on the Meiko parallel computing surface at Bath, will be adapted to compute the flow and heat transfer inside a rotating cavity with a peripheral flow of cooling air. This novel application is of fundamental scientific interest and is also of importance to manufacturers of industrial gas turbines and aeroengines. A complementary experimental programme (to be funded as part of the Brite/Euram Aeronautics Programme on gas turbines) will provide data to validate the solver, which will then be used to predict the flow and heat transfer between corotating gas-turbine discs at engine-operating conditions.
