The project will investigate the possibility of generating sufficiently strong flows of dielectrically suitable gases by electromagnetic means for extinguishing electronic arcs which are inevitably formed during current interruption in high voltage circuit breakers. It is already known that helical arcs in certain types of rotary arc interrupters repeatedly short circuit themselves during the current interruptions process and there is experimental evidence that some axial flows of gas are produced by such reciprocating action. It is proposed to investigate experimentally and model empirically the pumping action produced by such behaviour and to assess its possible use for a new generation of electromagnetic circuit breakers in which such action might be used in concert with other effects to improve interrupter efficiency. The experimental investigations will involve the use of optical fibre based monitoring systems.
