Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme is an innovative and demanding one with the prime objective of developing a polymer capable of conversion into monofilament yarns with outstanding hydrolytic stability whilst retaining textile and processing properties at least equivalent to the existing PET YARNS. The demand for significant improvement in hydrolytic stability arises from increased productivity machines being developed for the paper making industry and utilising higher temperatures. Viable alternatives to PET are being sought by investigating (a) blends and bicomponent yarns based on PET in combination with small proportions of selected LCP's and (b) novel polymers comprising non hydrolysable aromatic polyesters and incompletely rigid LCP's.
