To predict the wave kinematics in the presence of significant wind induced surface stresses, and to assess the validity of the existing irrotational solutions. To investigate the wave induced structures within the wind profile and to assess the influence of these structures on the wind induced surface stresses. To complete a detailed laboratory study of wind wave interactions and to review the existing field data. (1) Experimental study. This will consider the interaction between a series of mechanically generated two dimensional water waves and the overlying air flow. The measurements will include: (a) Two dimensional measurements of wind velocity. (b) Pressure flucuations within the air flow. (c) Wave characteristics and underlying kinematics. (2) Numerical model of wind stress. A numerical model similar to that proposed by Davis (1970) will consider the fluctuating components of both the normal and the tangential stress. Comparisons will be made with the new laboratory data of (1). (3) Formulation of the wave solution. The stresses predicted in (2) will be incorporated within a description of the wave field. The proposed solution will not be irrotational, and will include the development of the viscous boundary layer needed to support the applied tangential stress. (4) Assessment of other sea states. The work in (3) will be extended to include two further aspects.
