The application proposes a fundamental investigation of the relationship between the processing and oxidation (isothermal and cyclic) behaviour and a preliminary survey of the mechanical properties of MoSi2, MoSi2 -WSi2, MoSi2 -Ti5Si3 and NbSi2 -TiSi2 silicides. The programme will utilise available processing and characterisation facilities at Surrey and elevated temperature testing facilities at the materials IRC at Birmingham. Mo and Nb silicide base materials will be selected and produced by clean melting, chill block casting and hot pressing of powders produced from pulverised ribbons. The research programme will study the effects of non equilibrium processing on the microstructure of the materials, their isothermal and cyclic oxidation and the structural characteristics of the oxides. The programme will survey the effects of non equilibrium processing on the bend strength and fracture toughness of the materials at room and elevated temperatures. This survey will produce candidate processing conditions for optimum properties. The deliverables of the research programme will be: (a) protocols for the processing of Mo and Nb base silicides, (b) data related to their oxidation and mechanical properties and (c) data towards the specifications for the processing of Mo and Nb base silicides to give optimum mechanical properties and oxidation resistance.
