This proposal is for the development and application of a system for measuring the magnetic field dependence of elastic modulus ( E or G effect) to a resolution of 1 in 106 or better. The key to achieving the high resolution is the use of a frequency tracking system employing the latest direct digitally signal source.The applications of such a system are of two kinds: direct and indirect. Direct applications are those in which the primary goal is the measurement of the E effect itself, particularly for materials of a composite nature in terms of structure or domain configuration.Indirect applications are those in which the E effect is used as a sensitive probe of magnetic domain structure. The basis of this is that, for a given domain structure and knowing values of the magnetostriction and anisotropy, the E(H) dependence can be calculated. By inverting this process the measured E(H) behaviour can be used to identify characteristic domain features. The scale of E effect is governed by the quantity 2s/K where s is the saturation magnetostriction and K is the anisotropy. The ability to measure very small changes in E allows the method to be used either for very subtle changes in the domain structure or for materials with low magnetostriction.
