Summary on Grant Application Form
Although single crystal superalloys are now regularly used to produce turbine blades for use in critical positions in gas turbines for aircraft propulsion, it is unlikely that their full potential has been achieved, largely because there is insufficient knowledge of the crystallographic anisotropies that dominate the mechanical properties of these materials. The principal aim is to identify the mechanisms controlling the high temperature deformation of single crystal superalloys and to relate these to macroscopic measures of the anisotropies and asymmetries of deformation. Observations and measurements of microstructural evolution and macroscopic effects of plasticity will be used to validate and, if necessary, modify a model of anisotropic creep to provide a basis for engineering design.
