Summary on Grant Application Form
Considerable advances have been made, in this laboratory and elsewhere, in understanding the dependence of magnetoacoustic emission (MAE) on stress and also on microstructure. The object of the research proposed here is to make a systematic attack on the inverse problem, with the aim of using MAE to determine unknown stresses (including residual stresses). Experiments will be carried out on a systematic series of specimens with applied stresses, including non-uniform stresses, and in each case establishing how to measure and analyse the MAE in order to determine the stress components unambiguously. Since the MAE signal is affected not only by stress, but also by the microstructure, studies will also be carried out of the effect of various microstructures found in different steels. Throughout the research, experiments will be carried out both on model specimens and on specimens of practical importance obtained from industrial collaborators.
